The Stage 1 version of the Glossary has now been linked to from the UIS Cavers Multi-lingual Dictionary, and so now provides English definitions for most of the concepts in the Dictionary. It's now the Dictionary-Glossary System. Other Glossary language definitions will be linked to when they become available in later stages.

The Dictionary also has an added extra page for all its concepts, this page grouping all the concepts according to their one or more speleo subjects.

Stage 1 of the English version of the UIS Cave and Karst Glossary has now been published, and the project description and background updated.

Although only Stage 1 of what is expected to become an expanded multi-lingual multi-discipline speleo resource, this early 2700-term web version of a PDF original (Field, M.S. 2002) is usable immediately, and with stable addressable term IDs for linking to. At this early stage it is essentially just a copy of the PDF version with a few typos fixed and term ID numbers added.

Shortly the English terms in the UIS Cavers Multi-lingual Dictionary will be linked to their respective definitions in the Glossary.

2023-03-20:

The initial early draft web page of the Glossary that we have published was unchanged from its converted WordPerfect/PDF source (Field, 2002) except for the addition of our numeric Concept Number IDs. Since then Mike and I have been:
  • setting up the github repository for the project's files
  • correcting some data glitches in the WordPerfect conversion file
  • reformatting chemical/mineral formulas to the correct subscripting
  • correcting a few typos
  • and a few other cosmetic changes
This updated version will soon replace the current early first draft, as "Stage 1" of the Glossary, but is essentially still unchanged from the original PDF version. Note that there have been some Concept ID changes, caused by the data glitches, but the Concept IDs in this coming Stage 1 version will be stable and can be reliably linked to.

Later stages will focus on:
  • adding internal links, e.g. to definition sources
  • proper formatting of equations and their subscripted parameters
  • improved useability
  • multi-lingual aspects
  • improvements to some definitions
  • and the addition of new terms
We have also been establishing the links between the concepts in the existing
UIS Caver's Multi-lingual Dictionary
and the definitions in the Glossary, and a new version of the Dictionary will soon be published containing those links to the Glossary definitions.
